I don’t know how many other people here have signed-up for the CNS (Citizens Notification Service), but in my opinion it has been a big bust.
I don’t know who is in charge of it, or how they are alerted to an emergency and other pertinent and/or relevant information, but how hard would it be, to let say, send a message out to remind the subscribers to this service to turn your clocks back at 2 AM (11/01/09), and check/change your smoke detector batteries too.
I’ve also noticed that the other area notification services, send out a lot of other information for there counties that has impacted Charles County, but we didn’t receive anything from or CNS system.
I realize this is a free service to the citizens of Charles County, but when you don’t receive anything that may impact you, what good is it.
Thanks Coyote! I hadn’t forgot about the time change, but I did forget to make it a reminder on the Duck!
I agree that the CNS notifications are a bust! There’s even a flood advisory for coastal waterways of the County and no notifications went out.
For a couple of the severe weather events during the summer only a couple sporadic CNS notifications were sent. Some warnings went out, some didn’t. The most CNS notifications that I received were when they were testing the system.
i was surprised and disappointed to learn that the entire turnkey solution was outsourced.
doesn’t anyone expect their IT staff to actually develop anything anymore? are there any expectations of them? or are they just too busy waiting for Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday and then spending the rest of the month cleaning up the messes that arise from that?
Here again, no notification of the impending snow fall we received yesterday from CNS, I received many notifications
from our neighboring counties but none from the county I live in.
I don’t know who is in charge of the CNS, or how they get their info, or who distributes it,
but don’t you think it would be a good service to those of us who have signed-up for it, to
get a little courtesy notification to when the schools will be shut-down in the county, due
to a snow emergency.
Oh, and while I’m on the subject of in climate weather, I didn’t receive anything in reference
to this either, I didn’t know anything about the snow until I woke up at 4:00 this morning to
go to work.
Thanks Charles County, for another service that stinks!!!!!!!!!
I got plenty of notice on the storm on 12/19, but also none on the recent “dusting.” Gee Coyote, do you think its because the notification category was “severe weather alerts?” As to the school closure notice, they are not part of county government, as evidenced by the recent raises they granted versus the furloughs “enjoyed” by county government employees, the have their own alert notification system, closures are posted on their web site, and lo and behold, closures and delayed openings are reported on the local affiliate news programs, as has been the case for just about 40 years. Your pretty sad.

Gee Imperitor, sounds like you may be the “Slacker” in charge of the CNS, what did I hit a nerve?
I also think maybe you meant to spell Imperator, instead of Imperitor, because I think, you think you are one.
Well it seems that our county 911 system was experiencing widespread sporadic outages last night at around 2000 hrs, never did receive any notification from our “County Notification System” of this potently dangerous situation.
I think it’s time we get a new type of “Notification” system, or find someone else in the county to control and manage it.
Interesting, Coyote, I have a Verizon dial-up service that was out last night, also. The computer would dial the server number with no problem, but then I’d get a busy signal and no online access. Could the 2 outages be related?

I don’t know seahorse, I did a little snooping on my own and I found out that the majority of the outages were happening in and around LaPlata, and on the west side of the county. It involved the 911 system (it would have been nice if the county would have let us know there was a problem with our 911 notification system) and some residential and business’s phone service, I wonder if CIVISTA was affected.
Isn’t there a way to use a “reverse” 911 call as a notification? I have friends in another county and they get recorded phone call messages when the county gov wants to put out a notice. They get them when there’s a weather incident, traffic situation, school issues, etc. Would that work here? Sorry if I joined this late…just getting started here.
I believe you are correct FM II. However, I also believe I have heard that it takes some time to call everyone using that system. If that is the case, I would question the timeliness of such for things like tornado warnings and the like.
Seeing how today (09/08/10) is a “Code Red” day, which means that conditions are favorable for the spread of fire due to the wind and low humidity, I think it would have been a good idea for the CNS to send out a message telling the citizens of our county about this condition, to warn us to be careful when it comes to the possible dangers attributed to these hazardous conditions.
But what am I saying, they don’t know what kind of “Notifications” to send out.
