Has anyone heard anything about the Mall being shut down early awhile back due to the Sheriff’s Department losing control of the parking area between the Theater and the Mall due to gang activity?

It seems that there has been an ongoing turf war between rival gangs in the area, and patrons leaving the Theater are being jumped and robbed.

I wonder why the Sheriff’s Office says there’s no gang activity in our county. Go figure.

P.S.
It seems that all of the members of one gang wear dark clothes with black hoodies. The black hoodie is the common denominator.

It doesn’t take a “Rocket Scientist” to figure it out, if you see a group of thugs standing around in a “GANG” and they’re all wearing dark hoodies, it a good possibility they are the individuals I’m talking about, and they’re probably up to no good, especially in and around St. Charles Town Center.

Like they say, be aware of your surroundings, and if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

I see I’m not the only one who’s heard about this.

Now the Mall was shut down and the Sheriff’s Office lost control.  This story gets better and better.  Let’s see how crazy we can make this story.  I’ll add my twist.  I heard Marion Barry was there too.  He was selling crack.  It must be true, cause I “heard it”.

Before we rush to judge, I think everyone should take a couple of minutes and visit the Sheriff’s Office web site.  There is a link to CrimeReports.  Great tool and very accurate.

Coyote,

The more I think about you post here, the more it bothers me.  We know from your other posts that you are not a fan of Sheriff Coffey.  Which is fine.  There are quite a few people who don’t agree with his style of law enforcement especially the criminal element “thugs”.  But your post is more directed to the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office.  There is no need to trash these good men and women.  From your prior posts, it is obvious that your sources are providing you with information without any factual basis.  You posted that crime is up and morale is down.  Both are wrong.  Crime is down by double digits and morale is better than ever. Coyote, keep howling!  But remember the story about the boy who cried Coyote, I mean wolf!

Well Bill, maybe the crime rate is down in Charles County in general, but it’s exploding in the Waldorf area, just take a look at Crime Reports web page, and I think these stats are low, because I know a lot of incidents aren’t given to them.

I see the problem as the “Sheriff’s” deputies aren’t taught, or don’t know how to police anymore, I think they’ve forgotten the basics like “Community Policing”, I’ve lived in my subdivision for over 25 years, and not once have I or my neighbors (yes, I‘ve asked them) ever seen a “Street cop” ever patrol our neighborhood on a regular bases, you know drive through the area making a presence known so the “Thugs” can visually see they are patrolling the area(s).

Now I have seen deputies sitting behind the trees and bushes of the baseball/football fields on Substation Rd, or in/at the closest “Double D’s, or 7-Eleven, these are the best patrolled area’s around Charles County, and Bill please don’t give me the story that they’re doing their paperwork at these locations, because if that’s the case, then I think it would be more proactive, and practical to have these deputies doing their paperwork in different residential areas in various locations in the districts they’re assigned to, or hey how about at various locations in and around St. Charles Town Center once and awhile, you know, so the “Thugs” can see a “Police Presence” in that area.

Oh and by the way, I’m not trashing anyone, I’m just asking questions.

Everyone always thinks they can do a better job. Well Coyote, why don’t you sign up, endure 6 months at the police academy, 18 weeks of on the job training with a veteran officer, 2 years of probation, and show them how it’s done. You could be a one man savior for us all. Those that don’t know, or don’t have all the facts should probably keep their mouths shut until they do. Just my opinion…...

Coyote,

You are wrong about just about every aspect.  First of all, every incident is reported to crimereports.  It is done automatically every 24 hours.  Second and most important is that crime is down in the entire county, to include Waldorf.  When you post things without any facts to back it up, people tend to discard everything you say.  My information comes from a phone call to crimereports amd to the IT department at CCSO.  The whole process is automated, so no one is deciding what is going to be reported or not.  The crime numbers are from the Maryland State Police.  Actually the numbers for theft in the town of La Plata were way up, yet the numbers from the rest of the county were down.  If the theft numbers in La Plata didn’t rise, I have calculated the drop in crime for Charles County would have been a little over 15% give or take.

I refuse to speculate what officers are doing in their cars at the ball field or anywhere else.  For all I know they be grabbing a bite to eat or taking a break.  Or maybe they are doing paperwork. If you have a job, I’m sure you get breaks. Why shouldn’t they?

Instead of trashing our good officers, why not pull up beside one of them one day and thank them for what they do for our community.  And finally, we get it…You don’t like Rex Coffey.  So vote for your hug a thug buddy Jesse Williams.  He is all into that community policing stuff.  As he was quoted ‘locking people up won’t solve our problems”.

Coyote,
You claim all you are doing is asking questions yet I did not see you pose a single question in your previous post.  All you are doing is criticizing the officers of this county because you don’t think we do a good enough job.  With that said let me answer your “questions” from the standpoint of an officer who works in Waldorf.

1) To say crime is “exploding” in Waldorf is an exageration.  On what do you base this statement?  I have worked as a patrol officer for the better part of a decade in Waldorf and although I have not noticed a significant decline in the calls I have handled or the reports I have taken I will say that it has remained about the same even with the rise in population.  With the current state of our economy the fact that crime has not rised is impressive and speaks volumes of the job the officers at the lowest level of this agency are doing.

2) If you aren’t seeing an officer constantly patrol your neighborhood then you obviously do not live in a problem neighborhood.  Should this make you happy?  Perhaps, and at the same time this may anger you because you pay taxes like everyone else and rightfuly deserve police services but let me fill you in on something:  Police departments all over the country are severely understaffed and have been for a long time.  We have to do the most we can with what we have and often times our proactive enforcement is concentrated on our busier neighborhoods.  We would love to have more officers and smaller sectors but money is a little tight right now and a signifficant increase in the size of the Sheriff’s Office is needed but until the county gives the Sheriff more money it isn’t going to happen.  I’ll offer you this advice: If you want to see police in your neighborhood more often you can email me and I will give you a few suggestions of neighborhoods to relocate too and I promise you will see police so often you’ll beg us to go away.

3) Cops at “Double Ds”......where do I begin?
This statement was nothing more that a low blow stemming from your low opinion of either the Sheriff, his deputies, or maybe both.  Cops, like “real” people, like stuff like coffee, soda, snacks, food, etc while they are at work so deal with it.  Im sure you eat at work, I bet you even get a lunch break to do it.

4) As far as officers sitting off of Substation Road they could be doing a number of things to include reports, investigations, mandatory online training, eating, etc….  You think we should do this in neighborhoods or shopping centers and the Sheriff would agree with you I think.  As an officer I can tell you that it isn’t going top happen and this is why:
If I am sitting in my car writing a report on my computer my attention is focused on my computer screen or my notebook.  When I do this I am at my most vulnerable.  For this reason I do these things in open spaces where I can see in all directions for a significant distance.  This way, if someone does walk up on me I hopefully have a chance to see them coming.  The 4 officers who were murdered in Lakewood, WA were doing paperwork in a public place and we saw how quickly one psycho killed all 4 of them.

Hope this answers your “questions”.

E. Nigma,

Great job of explaining how things work.  It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders.  I know most of our community loves you guys and think you are doing a great job.  If you don’t hear it often enough, Thank you for everything you do to keep me, my family, friends and community safe.  I am sorry you have to come to a blog to defend yourself and your fellow officers.

E. Enigma, Thank You for your detailed answer to my questions, I apologize for everything I’ve written in the past, you have explained this better than anyone in the past, for this I Thank You also, be careful out there.

Again, I apologize for my ignorance.

Sorry for perpetuating a necropost, but I missed this thread originally and read it with great interest.

With an election looming in the near future, maybe revisiting this isn’t a bad idea.
How do those numbers compare today? Is the trend still towards a lower crime rate?  More importantly (to me) has the type of crime that we are experiencing these days changed? Is it more serious? (ie, more armed robberies as oppposed to busting someone for pot possession).
