Wow!  Not one incumbent for co. commission has been endorsed.  Indy must be disgusted with them, too. LOL

Thanks Quack for clarifying that these endorsements are for the PRIMARY contested races!  When I first saw who they endorsed for District 2, my first thought was what’s the deal here! Then I realized that Rick Campbell is unopposed as a Republican for District 2.  Now the trick is that many who read the Indy won’t think these are the Indy’s ONLY endorsements!!

Too bad they got this one wrong Bill. I can’t wait for Sheriff Williams to take office.

Looks like the INDY and the Duck don’t agree when it comes to the State’s Attorney endorsement.  Tony Covington will do a great job.

Not a single commissioners’ incumbent was endorsed…a bullhorn couldn’t have announced any more clearly the dissatisfaction with the current commissioners. Interesting that most of the folks I like are on this list.

I hope the two endorsed President’s candidates survive…those are the two I am torn over and would like to see debate each other. Ms. Kelly has some experience and Mr. Thompson appears to be a no BS manager. From what little I have seen, I think the county will be in good hands with either.

The holiday screwed me up…I forgot it was Wednesday…would have liked to have read the rationale before I came to work today. Oh well, I’ll get to it when I get home tonight.

Joan, please just accept the fact that pretty much everyone is happy with Coffey’s leadership. The Indy is just another example of why you don’t fix something that is not broke. DW was part of the “good old” boy network that was known as the “Fred Davis” years. Their time has come and gone. We (the county) cannot afford to go backwards. All those liberal “hug a thug” programs are gone now that Coffey has taken office and crime is down. Do we want crime to increase? I certainly don’t. The men and women of the CCSO endorsed Rex, now the Indy has given their blessing. CALEA gave the CCSO it’s highest honors. What more do you want? A man who did nothing as a commander, who illegally audio taped an FOP meeting, launched an investigation into a former FOP VP (with his 12 year old daughter as the complainant), used subordinates to put a roof on his house while working, and wants Ely as his 2nd in command (This guy has a foreclosure and a bankruptcy on his record) to be in charge of $66 million in taxpayer money. Please, look through your devotion and do whats best for the county.

Imagine that, the newspaper’s editor and I have a difference in opinion. You neglected to point out that the Fraternal Order of Police also endorse Tony Covington, as does current State’s Attorney Len Collins and Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler. I never said Mr. Covington wouldn’t do a good job as State’s Attorney. I merely support Hammad Matin.

When Hodge went after the Indy, I think the deal was sealed as far as hands off the bozos.
Sure glad it took some time but this should prove a very telling election!

I swear, I’m not trying to throw a wet blanket on this celebration of the Indy’s endorsements, but can someone please tell me again under what circumstances that it’s appropriate for a news “reporting” entity to endorse political figures?

I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that this was the newspaper’s editorial, and therefore the opinion of the editor—and perhaps some others in the newsroom—and not the “reporting” entity of the news agency.

For much longer than you or I have been alive, newspapers have been endorsing candidates for elected office. The significance of newspapers—and thereby their endorsements—have changed greatly over that time. That stated, the practice of newspapers, or any news reporting agency, endorsing candidates is anything but a universal practice. The most important thing to remember when considering a “news agency’s” endorsement is that the choice is made independent of their “news” department. There is a clear line separating the news and opinion sides, even in our local Maryland Independent. News reporters use their experience and expertise to gather and analyze information, but their stories are not a reflection of their personal views or that of the editors. In the end, an endorsement is no different than any other editorial they publish. It is the opinion of the members of the editorial board on an issue they feel is important to the community they serve.

Or, maybe I’m full of it.

I get it, I just don’t like it.  If the rag guy at the local car wash decided to proclaim his list of endorsements, would the Indy print it as news?  As you said, it’s just someone’s opinion.  When you print that opinion in a newspaper, however, it becomes “news” to the casual reader.  Over the years, readers, and other news outlets, have given undue credence to the “opinion” of these editors.  We all know that NBC, CNN, Fox, etc. have biases, it doesn’t mean it’s right.  I would prefer that news organizations just presented the news.

I have the same issue with 24 hour cable news networks claiming to be fair and balanced while admittedly only airing nine hours of news and 15 hours of opinion-based shows, blurring the line and distinction between which is which. And yes I’m picking on FOX News, but all the networks are guilty of it.

I read the endorsements and while a disagree with one or two; I think the advertisements were very telling. Can someone please explain to me Dr Pattersons advertisement- She quotes the FOP President, takes credit for things that at best are incidental to her service and then accuses her ‘opponent’ of using bad tactics and distorting her record. I heard her say something at the forum about negative campaigning and now this; CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THIS IS ABOUT?
