Al-Qaida suspect from NJ worked at 6 nuke plants

Frederick News-Post, by GEOFF MULVIHILL

An American seized in Yemen in a sweep of suspected al-Qaida members had been a laborer at six U.S. nuclear power plants, and authorities are investigating whether he had access to sensitive information or materials that would be useful to terrorists.

Sharif Mobley, 26, worked for contractors at plants in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland from 2002 to 2008, mostly hauling materials and setting up scaffolding, plant officials said.
[...]
Mobley worked for contractors at the Salem and Hope Creek nuclear plants in New Jersey from 2002 to 2008; the Peach Bottom, Limerick and Three Mile Island plants in Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2007; and Calvert Cliffs in Maryland for two weeks in 2006, operators said.

  • 1. · Thats kind of scary considering the clearances these guys need to go thru to get onto the plants- heck; even the office equipment and desks are each searched and sealed before they enter the plants for use.

  • 2. · Nuclear plants useful to terrorists!
    ya think
if those two planes hit calvert cliffs instead of buildings we would be gone! It is so close to a huge gas plant.
another reason we don't need a third reactor. No one is blowing up solar panels or wind turbines. Bring on the safe clean energy...

  • 3. · Amphibia- I think the reactors are designed to withstand direct hits from aircraft- I know they will not tell you the specifics because then it will get out to the people you do not want it to.- but I do think that the designs included this safety feature as well as bomb strikes.
I'm sure the newer ones will have even greater safeguards.

After reading the article this guy did not get anywhere near any secret areas as they are well guarded during outages. Again they will not say what the security carry or how they are trained- but I am sure it is state of the art equipment.

All the employees knows if someone does something -they are all dead and so are extra vigilant during these times.

Apparently this guy wasnt 'extreme' during this time- but it just shows that you cant judge people by how they act or what they look like.

  • 4. · It must cost a lot of money to safeguard and watch over something like that just so we can turn a light on.

state of the art equipment-you mean like at the airport
I'm sure they have safeguards but it is mankinds way to slip up from time to time look at our space mishaps.

This is a deadly material and we have better and much cheeper ways to get power.

  • 5. · I absolutely agree, but find me wind and solar solutions that can generate 1600MW per hour. We've become a society dependent on electricity. We can choose to stop consuming so much electricity or continue to rely on commercial power generation. Ideally to reduce demand a combination of personal wind and solar generation to reduce dependency (but most people don't have the money to make that conversion) and commercial generation is the best short-term solution, but I see everyone switching to hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles before you see windmills and solar panels in everyone's yards.

In the meantime we have to look at meeting the residential, commercial and industrial need for electricity -- massive amounts of electricity. Of all large MW generators, nuclear is by far the best for the environment. It has a proven safety record, and it has a proven on-line record for generation. On it's scale of generation, it's the best option.

  • 6. · The EIA recently came out with a revised cost comparison per watt of generation. This is of the overall cost -- factoring financing, construction, operation, maintenance, decommissioning (if applicable) and inflation -- for coal, nuclear, wind and solar.

    Coal$5.18
    Nuclear$4.27
    Wind$5.49
    Solar$6.69

  • 7. · COAL I am opposed to more than anything- from its beginning costs of extracting to its end result of COAL ash- it is destructive and dirty. Unhealthy for every human and the environment.
It keeps people in a lower social order and keeps communities from advancing to newer ways.

This comes from a great granddaughter of a Pocahantus Coal Mine employee in Hempthill WVA; where my father was born...to a resident in other areas of VA and WVA and PA where the economy depended upon coal (and the steel mills that used coal) to the present day ecological disasters in our air and water from burning coal and its after effects.

If you believe Coal is good- I'll take you to WVA to see what is real.

  • 8. · Two majorority French-government-owened corporations-Aveva and Electricite de France-would reap huge U.S. taxpayer funds if nuclear is expanded in the U.S.

France exported nuclear technology to Iran, now subject of international controversy about whether Iran is also developing nuclear weapons.

France delivered and helped build Irac's Osirak reactor that was subsequently bombed by Israel in 1981..

Here is a short list of risk from exposure...
damage to tissues, cells,DNA and other pivotal molecules, potentially causing programmed cell death (apoptosis),genetic mutations, cancers, leukemias, birth defects and reproductive, immune, cardiovascular and endocrine system disorders.

    what is real?

  • 9. · Coal is bad who doen't no that but many are fooled into thinking nuclear is good if uraniun mining was going on in WVA you would hate it as much as coal. Uranium mining reppresents a consistent violation of environmental justice across the globe.

Just ask the Navajo you will hear the word genocide.

Land and people dont need to suffer so we can have power!

Lets put the sun to work-clean,reliable and virtually maintenance free source of renewable energy.

If every home built from now on instaled solar as part of norm installation just like sideing or shingels we would have less power woes.

It all depends on where the money goes.
we can't go on with nuclear financial failure.
new reactors are 100 percent UNCONDITIONALLY backed by U.S. TAXPAYERS
Why bet the farm on this stuff? lets give wind and solar federal loan guarantees.

  • 10. · I agree that I want wind and solar and if my creek runs fast enough aqua power.
It is expensive to install if you already have conventional.
I think the best solution is the firms who are installing solar on homes and renting til paid or- instead of your bill going to the elec co- you pay the solar firm til you have generated enough to pay for the equipment.

Any other solution that can be found for the expense?

  • 11. · More Government incentives intrest free loans or financing till it pays for itself.
but I don't think the power co. wants you to avoid escalating energy cost and uncontrolled price increases.

I think that is the problem it always comes back to the money.

Good luck-in the long run you will save alot.
