On Tuesday morning, the Charles County Commissioners voted to approve the proposed budget amendment and budget transfer presented to them by the
Department of Fiscal and Administrative Services.
Due to a significant loss in projected interest income and income taxes, the County calculated it was necessary to offset their revenue decline by approximately $3.5 million. After reviewing last year’s budget and analyzing trends, Fiscal Services determined approximately $2 million needed to be cut from the County’s operating budget. Although public safety and education account for more than 70% of the County’s budget the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and Charles County Board of Education were not asked to make cuts in this process.
The County was also able to realize $900,000 through budget reallocation of positions and salary savings from a hiring freeze.
Additionally, Fiscal Services requested to transfer $700,000 from the County’s Cable Fund to the General Fund to enable them to offset the projected
revenue losses.
