Forum Gives In-Depth Glimpse of Congressional Candidates

By Carrie Griffin Munn

The Bay Net,

A capacity crowd of 200-plus congregated at the Auerbach Auditorium in St. Mary’s Hall Tuesday, Sept 7 for a Congressional candidates’ forum. The event, sponsored by St. Mary’s College Center for the Study of Democracy and the St. Mary’s County NAACP, was intended to help local voters make informed decisions about their elected officials when voting in the upcoming election.
[...]
Current Representative in Congress for the Fifth District, Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer offered a statement of apologies for not attending due to a prior engagement.

Candidates for the Republican seat Charles Lollar and Collins A. Bailey shared a table and Democratic candidatesSylvanus G. Bent and Andrew Charles Gall shared another. In their opening remarks, the candidates summed up their reasons for running for the prestigious seat.

  • 1. · Well before I make a cynical remark...does anyone know what our illustrious Congressional representative was doing as opposed to this event?

  • 2. · Steny never attends these events. He will never debate any candidate because it is not in his best interest. Steny believes that there is no advantage to debate. He doesn't give a crap if the people would like to hear a debate and he doesn't give a crap what his constituents want in Washington. He truly believes that if he continues to do nothing, he will just keep winning elections. Welcome to the People's Republic of Maryland!

BTW, there will be another candidates forum sponsored by the CCCC (the Chamber) on Oct. 13th at the Jaycee hall. They are trying to decide on a forum and would like to have a debate. Anybody wanna bet on Steny showing up? If he does decide to grace us with his prescence, I would go double or nothing that he will insist on pre-screened questions.

My fellow comrades of The People’s Republic of Maryland have spoken. Now, hopefully, someone will make my house payment for me!

Does Steny know where So. MD is?

    Does he even care?

Steny is in it for Steny. He's another one who doesn't respond and when he does it's just "boilerplate" and doesn't address the specific questions posed to him.

    Remember in November!!!

  • 5. · Cheryl,

you couldn't be more correct. I have written him numerous times. Every time I recieve the same "pre-fab" response thanking me for contacting him and so forth. Never any response of substance. I doubt he even reads his mail. Most likely comes from some poor staffer in some basement whose job is to stuff envelopes.
