Thanks to the Independent for drawing our attention to Commissioner Edith Patterson’s failure to attend meetings of the Council of Governments’ Air Quality Committee [”Patterson failed to attend meetings,” Sept. 1]. No one should portray themselves as a regional player and then not attend the meetings of the very group that gives them that credential to tout.
I’d like to point out or clarify a few things that the story missed that readers might find interesting and important to understand. While the county is not a full member of the MWCOG, it is a dues-paying member for the opportunity to participate in COG’s Transportation Planning Board. Both this board, and the Air Quality Committee, are very much linked, and, in fact, are federally mandated. The Air Quality Committee is the entity established to comply with the federal Clean Air Act. It is staffed by COG, but technically it is a separate entity comprised of the states of Maryland, Virginia and D.C., and the regional jurisdictions in the ozone nonattainment area, of which Charles is one.
