Postmaster Faces up to 10 Years in Prison for Stealing from Local Post Office

The Bay Net,

Gilbert Ennis, age 56, of Lanham, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to stealing $59,958.21 in postal stamps from the Marbury Post Office in Charles County where he was the postmaster.  As part of his plea agreement, Ennis has agreed to resign from the U.S. Postal Service and pay restitution of $59,958.21 from his federal retirement account.

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein, Special Agent in Charge Joanne Yarbrough of the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General and Charles County Sheriff Rex Coffey.

  • 1. · He stole almost $60K worth of stamps before he was caught? The Marbury post office? I'd be surprised if Marbury sold $60K worth of stamps in a year. I could be wrong, but WOW! That's a lot of stamps.

What an idiot to give up a cush job like postmaster with good health care and retirement benefits!

  • 3. · One of the charges that got Dan Rostenkowski removed as chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee and led to the end of his career in Congress was stealing postage stamps. There must be something very appealing about stealing postage stamps.

  • 4. · Don't mess with the U.S. Mail. It makes any crime a federal one.

That's what I'd like to know.

Personally, I hardly ever use the U.S. Mail. I pay all my bills online and with email, no one ever writes letters anymore (which is sad).

The only time I use a lot of stamps is for Christmas cards and birthday cards, otherwise I have little or no need for them.

  • 6. · Rostenkowski did not steal stamps. he over-used the privilege of franking, ie, mailing to constituents under congressional exemption from postage. It's not the same. Acrime, yes, but a lot different from a postmaster stealing stamps.

  • 7. · No, he sold stamps back to the House post office and kept the cash. The stamps were provided as a franking privilege and he converted them to cash for personal use.

  • 8. · I stand corrected. Thanks mbillard.
