No Child Left Behind: 10 States Receive Waivers From Education Law's Sweeping RequirementsHuff PostKIMBERLY HEFLING and BEN FELLER 02/ 9/12 07:04 AM ETWASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Thursday will free 10 states from the strict and sweeping requirements of the No Child Left Behind law, giving leeway to states that promise to improve how they prepare and evaluate students, The Associated Press has learned.The first 10 states to receive the waivers are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee. The only state that applied for the flexibility and did not get it, New Mexico, is working with the administration to get approval, a White House official told the AP.The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the states had not yet been announced. Drawing on psychology and brain research, these educators aim to articulate a more precise, and scientific, vocabulary for praise that will push children to work through mistakes and take on more challenging assignments. Consider teacher Shar Hellie’s new approach in Montgomery County.To get students through the shaky first steps of Spanish grammar, Hellie spent many years trying to boost their confidence. If someone couldn’t answer a question easily, she would coach him, whisper the first few words, then follow up with a booming “¡Muy bien!”But on a January morning at Rocky Hill Middle School in Clarksburg, the smiling grandmother gave nothing away. One seventh-grade boy returned to the overhead projector three times to rewrite a sentence, hesitating each time, while his classmates squirmed in silence.“You like that?” Hellie asked when he settled on an answer. Wants son to attend Somers. 13 years ago, took a pay cut to come here. Will have to reconsider her employment if this policy passes.James Brietinger - moved to La Plata...both students attend LaPlata High School out of zone. Retired but wife is a teacher. Thinks policy change is disguised as overcrowding. Has not seen statistics on enrollment that justify overcrowding. You’re Invited to the 9th Annual Heritage Bike Ride

The Bay Net,

Don’t miss out on a great day of biking through beautiful Western Charles County! Riders age 16 and older are invited to join us Saturday, May 15, 7:30 a.m. to -3 p.m. for a scenic ride beginning at Nanjemoy Community Center. Check-in runs 7:30-9:30 a.m., and the last SAG run will be 3 p.m. Resident Fee: $25; Non-Resident: $27; add $5 if registering the day of. Preregistration Deadline: May 7. Preregistration is strongly recommended. Lunch provided by Chick-fil-A of La Plata.

We’ll start the day at the “end of the road” in scenic Nanjemoy, and enjoy a ride with stops at local points of interest. The western section of Charles County will delight you with its sense of serenity and history. Each route for the Heritage Bike Ride begins and ends at the Nanjemoy Community Center. Three recreational routes to choose from: 100k, 50k, or 25k.
